THE TOEFL CHANGED FOREVER ON JAN 21, 2026
The “Academic” era is over. Welcome to the “Functional” era.
❌ The Old TOEFL (Pre-2026)
- 0–120 Scale.
- Long 700-word passages.
- 20-minute lectures.
- Independent Essay.
✅ The New TOEFL (Post-2026)
- 1–6 International Scale.
- Adaptive Testing.
- ‘Real Life’ English tasks.
WHAT HAS CHANGED?
1. READING: No More Long Passages
You are no longer reading long history articles. You are now tested on Morphology (filling in missing letters in words) and Daily Life texts (reading emails, schedules, and notices).
2. LISTENING: It’s About Speed
The new “Response” task plays a question once, and you have seconds to choose the correct reply. It tests social understanding (pragmatics), not just memory.
3. SPEAKING: The Interview
The “Independent Task” is gone. It is replaced by a Live Interview Simulation. You have ZERO preparation time. You must answer immediately, just like in a real Zoom call.
4. WRITING: No More Essays
The 30-minute essay is dead. You now have two fast tasks:
- Write an Email (7 Minutes)
- Academic Discussion (10 Minutes)
5. SCORING: The 1–6 Scale
The old 120-point scale is gone. The test now uses the International 1–6 Band Scale.
- Band 1-2: Beginner
- Band 3-4: Intermediate (B1-B2)
- Band 5-6: Advanced (C1-C2)
